Network security tools

From Insecure.org comes the Top 100 Network Security Tools. A list of various users’ favorite security tools.

I’ve heard of quite a few of these, and even used some of them. There is everything from sniffers and snorters to crackers and cheese. Well, ok, so there’s nothing cheesy about it except that joke. :) Vulnerability scanners and port scanners, firewalls and packet crafting. Everything you need to test your network like the bad guys so you know how well it holds up before finding out the hard way!

There’s a lot of useful information provided for each tool besides just a name and description, such as what platforms it will run on, interface type (GUI/Command line) and if it’s free or costs money. Even Google is listed – I’ll admit, I’ve done some interesting google searches before trying to understand a security issue or curiosity, and 9 times out of 10 it has been a great help.

This is a great bookmark to have, you never know when you will need something from this list.

Of these five entries, there were three that caught were liveCDs: Number 1 of 5 was Backtrack, 2 of 5 was Knoppix, and 4 of 5 was Helix. For more information, go check out his review, but two of the three entries caught my eye. Here are Fyodor’s descriptions: [...]
