A Guide To Workplace Security

Though businesses are constantly told about the importance of workplace security, far too few of them actually take the steps necessary to make theirs as safe and secure as it should be. This not only puts employees at risk, but also leads to high insurance premiums. Some insurance companies will even refuse to pay out if they feel that a business has been negligent in relation to workplace security.

Having strong locks on your doors and windows is the first step to making your workplace secure, but doing that alone is not good enough. There are lots of other workplace security precautions that you should be considering, such as these…

– Set-up a CCTV camera to monitor people coming in all building entrances.

– Install shutters that can be pulled down over windows and doors at the end of the working day.

– Employ security personnel to guard the main entrance.

– Install a metal detector immediately in front of the door where members of the public enter the premises.

– Brief employees on steps to take if a threatening or violent incident arises.

– Utilize an under-the-counter alarm system so that employees can discreetly alert security staff if they need assistance.

– Place a plastic window on service counters if large amounts of cash are being dealt with.

– Use a registered security company to take money to and from the bank.

– Position your reception area directly in front of the main public entrance.

– Utilize a code word system that allows employees to alert their colleagues if they need urgent help.

– Issue all employees with photo identification cards.

– Require visitors to sign in and out of the building and to carry a visitors pass with them.

– Position furniture and partitions so that access to high risk areas (such as where money is kept) is not visible to members of the public.

If you are unsure which of those that you should implement, then you should consider bringing in a security professional to make a thorough assessment of your workplace and to make workplace security suggestions that are directly relevant to your business. Though this may seem like a lot of effort, it will be worth it in the long run. No business that spends extra time, effort and money on making their workplace safe and secure regrets it. Your premises, equipment and employees are well worth protecting.
