Go Astros!

I don’t follow sports, but I hear the Astros are doing well lately. I’m looking forward to attending my obligatory yearly sporting event of some fashion, which this year happens to be an Astros game. Tomorrow night as a matter of fact.

It’ll be fun – and even better if they win! I just wonder if I can call in that I’ll be late the following morning, after all I DID get the tickets from work and I expect to be out at least an hour past my bedtime :)

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

KrAzY Chronicles » Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I saw it this weekend… It was okay, and perhaps follows the book better as some have said. I wouldn’t know, since I’ve not read the book. It was definately different, in several respects and some, I feel, for the better – but it lacks in a few areas as well.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

However, this remake left out a lot of the good “heart” of the original story which focused on right and wrong, morals, ethics, and respect for others. The underlying story is still there, but the juicy parts are missing. It’s just another movie with another story, and good effects. They did a very nice job of recreating some of the original movie, and the oompa loompa is funny. I like the new pop versions of the songs. (notice I said the oompa loompa, watch it and you’ll understand) Thank goodness Marilyn Manson didn’t get the part of Willy Wonka!

Overall, interesting and entertaining to see… but if I was going to buy one for my collection, it would be the 1971 original, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory :)

Dear Auntie Em: Hate you; hate Kansas; took Toto. – Dorothy.

Let’s see, WIZard of oz… Yellow brick road… Even one of the IMDB taglines for this movie is “Gaiety! Glory! Glamour!” It’s certainly got its homosexual connotations! Dorothy even said, “She isn’t coming yet, Toto” as one of the first lines in the movie. With all this sexual innuendo, you still let your kids watch this movie?

Optimus Morphing Keyboard?

Someone sent this to a mailing list I’m on… I can see the advantage to game players – but there are many other alternatives also! Unfortunately, I’m sure it costs a pretty penny – but just think if they were cheaper than a large touch screen – I can see them becoming useful at kiosks.

The keys can change to represent whatever you need them to be, even showing color icons. This is awesome!

Go check out the Optimus Keyboard

If you find a price anywhere, let me know – I’d be curious to see how proud they are of it!

Mobile Wifi Hotspot

So I was flipping through popsci in the bathroom the other day (The only place I get any reading done) and they had this article that caught my attention about using a verizon wireless internet card along with some other equipment to make a mobile wifi hotspot in a backpack…

This is all nice and everything, but what good will it really do?

So someone will pick up a signal for about 10 seconds as you drive by their house? Or someone else will be able to browse the internet at your favorite no-wifi cafe until you decide to leave, then they’re stuck with no internet and in the middle of some project or picking up someone for a potential ‘hookup’ that evening. That’s plain cruel!

I guess it’s useful if you and a group of your friends want to sit out at the park or somewhere else that doesn’t have wifi – that way at least it’s being used and it’s more of a group decision when to cut it off and head home.

I still think a better alternative would be to approach the managment of that establishment and inform them of not only your desire to see wifi access there, but of the approximate costs involved and how to set it up. Even offer your assistance if they are interested. This way, not only are more places online and sharing their internet from a static location – it also saves you the $80-100 per month for the wireless card and service :)
